Ingredients
1 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for a kick)
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup finely chopped bell pepper (green or red)
Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper (if using).
In another bowl, combine buttermilk, milk, and beaten egg.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
Fold in finely chopped onion and bell pepper until evenly distributed in the batter.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, frying in batches. Cook until hush puppies are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Remove hush puppies from oil using a slotted spoon and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Serve Homemade Hush Puppies warm, accompanied by your favorite dipping sauce or as a side to fried fish or seafood.
