Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cube steaks (about 1 lb total)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- For the Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- In another shallow bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
- Dredge each cube steak in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and coat again in the flour mixture. Press the flour onto the steak to adhere well.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
- Fry steaks for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
- For the Gravy: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Season gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve chicken fried steaks hot, topped with the homemade gravy.
Notes
- For extra crispy coating, let the breaded steaks rest for 5–10 minutes before frying.
- Use buttermilk instead of milk for extra flavor in the egg wash.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, green beans, or cornbread for a classic Southern meal.
- Leftovers can be reheated in the oven at 350°F to retain crispiness.
