  • Author: Lara Smith
  • Total Time: 40 mins
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy is the ultimate Southern comfort food. Tender cube steaks are coated in a crispy, seasoned breading and fried to golden perfection, then topped with rich, creamy homemade gravy. Serve it with mashed potatoes or your favorite sides for a hearty, satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cube steaks (about 1 lb total)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • For the Gravy:
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. In another shallow bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
  3. Dredge each cube steak in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and coat again in the flour mixture. Press the flour onto the steak to adhere well.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
  5. Fry steaks for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  6. For the Gravy: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  7. Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Season gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve chicken fried steaks hot, topped with the homemade gravy.

Notes

  • For extra crispy coating, let the breaded steaks rest for 5–10 minutes before frying.
  • Use buttermilk instead of milk for extra flavor in the egg wash.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, green beans, or cornbread for a classic Southern meal.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven at 350°F to retain crispiness.
