Ingredients

Scale
  • For the cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the frosting:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Sliced almonds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour a 15×10-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a saucepan, combine butter and water; bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
  4. Pour hot butter mixture over dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
  5. Add lightly beaten eggs, sour cream, almond extract, and vanilla extract; stir until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool slightly in the pan.
  8. For the frosting, heat butter and milk in a saucepan until melted and hot (do not boil).
  9. Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar, almond extract, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  10. Pour warm frosting over the warm cake and spread evenly.
  11. Sprinkle with sliced almonds, if desired. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Frost the cake while it’s still warm so the frosting sets smoothly and forms a slight glaze.
  • Store covered at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for longer freshness.
  • For an extra almond kick, add a few drops of almond extract to the cake batter.
